Using Correct Pronouns

“When someone [tells] you who they are, believe them the first time!” – Maya Angelou

You don’t need to understand pronouns to respect them! Using a person’s correct pronouns is essential for several reasons:

  • Respect and Dignity: Using someone’s chosen pronouns shows respect for their identity and acknowledges their humanity.
  • Affirmation of Identity: For many, pronouns, such as names, are vital to their identity. Using the correct ones can affirm who they are.
  • Building Welcoming Environments: Using the correct pronouns fosters community, making spaces safer and more welcoming for everyone.
  • Reduces Misunderstanding and Harm: Correct pronoun usage helps avoid confusion and miscommunication and can prevent causing harm to an individual’s sense of self and community.
  • Promotes Understanding: It encourages a culture of understanding and acceptance, which is essential for healthy relationships and communities.

Overall, it’s about recognizing and valuing each person’s individuality. Together, we can build a less discriminatory community! Let’s start with using correct pronouns!
