The Johnson Amendment: What Faith Communities Need to Know

Since the 1950’s, the Johnson Amendment to the United States Constitution has been a key piece in protecting the separation of church and state. However, religious extremists that wish to blur the lines between church and state have been slowly working to chip away at this vital demarcation. As discussed in a previous post, weakening the Johnson Amendment threatens to erode a critical boundary between religion and government.

But what is the Johnson Amendment? What impact does it have on faith communities and other nonprofits? And what is the danger of weakening the delineations around nonprofit status?

The team at Interfaith Alliance of Colorado has been hard at work discovering answers to these questions. These decisions have wide ranging implications, though not all are as clear as they seem. We hope that our What Faith Communities Need to Know: The Johnson Amendment resource will help to answer these questions and clear up some misconceptions about the role the Johnson Amendment plays in keeping government interference out of faith communities and vice-versa.
