In Judaism, Rachamim, meaning compassion and mercy, is a guiding principle. It is one of the thirteen attributes of God, and comes from the word racham, which means womb. This roots Rachamim in relationship, how we understand each other’s experiences and how we hold each other. It also demonstrates how compassion is connected to how we grow and our responsibility to our children.
Jews believe we are all created in the image of God, and we are called to show up in ways that we hope God would. As one of the thirteen attributes of God, compassion is one of the most important ways in which we can show up
“Heaven grants compassion to those who are compassionate to others, and withholds it from those who are not.” from the Talmud, Sabbath 151b
