Reciprocity or Right Relationship is common in many Pagan traditions. This principle means living with respect, balance, and mutual care among people, spirits, and the natural world. Across many Pagan paths, compassion is rooted in the belief that all life is interconnected and sacred. This includes humans, the Earth, animals, spirits, ancestors, and the divine. Because of this, kindness, empathy, and responsibility toward others and the natural world are seen as acts of spiritual and moral importance.
Xenia, meaning sacred hospitality and kindness to strangers, is a core value in Hellenic (Greek) and Roman revivalist traditions. Compassion is expressed through justice, hospitality, and honoring the divine within others. In the Greek/Hellenic traditions, hospitality (xenia) is a sacred duty protected by Zeus. In many myths, kindness to travelers or the poor is rewarded by the gods. In Roman Paganism, concepts like pietas (duty and kindness toward family, gods, and community) emphasize compassionate responsibility.
