In our 2024 Vote Your Values Guide, the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado explained its support for Amendment 79.
As an organization that is dedicated to reproductive justice and individual rights, Interfaith is consistent in its support for abortion rights. As a longtime member of Colorado’s Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice Coalition, we have put our values into action, working with others to protect abortion rights in Colorado and expand access across our state.
Our strong support might be a surprise to some; the association of religious faith with opposition to abortion is often used to paint a very black and white picture of people of faith. But we know that the reality is that people of faith and conscience have different beliefs and attitudes about abortion, and that many people of faith strongly support abortion rights. Every individual should be supported in exercising their rights in accordance with their individual faith and conscience, and their needs, without government interference.
Our support for reproductive rights is deeply connected to and aligned with our mission and vision for our state. As explained in our Vision Statement, the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado imagines “faith communities from many traditions and backgrounds who are committed to work grounded in our shared values, in order to engage in collaborative action to dismantle systemic oppression.” Abortion restrictions and lack of access do the most harm to the most vulnerable in our communities and are fundamentally at odds with maternal health and well-being. Abortion restrictions and barriers to care exacerbate the existing maternal health crisis in the U.S. and reinforce systemic oppression. Beyond individual rights, our dedication to dismantling systemic oppression and our commitment to reproductive justice demands that we take action.
